Total Time:30 minutes
Yield:6 servings 1x
Ingredients
Scale
6 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and diced
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup water or apple cider
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional, to prevent browning)
Pinch of salt
Instructions
Peel, core, and dice the apples into uniform pieces. Toss them with lemon juice (if using) to prevent browning.
In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the diced apples and brown sugar to the skillet. Stir to coat the apples evenly with the butter and sugar.
Pour in the water or apple cider. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves (if using), and a pinch of salt. Stir well to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the apples simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until they are tender but still slightly firm. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
If you prefer a thicker compote, remove the lid and let the mixture simmer for a few more minutes, allowing some of the liquid to evaporate.
Taste the compote and adjust the sweetness or spices to your liking. Add more brown sugar for a sweeter compote, or more cinnamon for a spicier flavor.
Serve the warm cinnamon apple compote warm, as is, or with your favorite toppings like whipped cream, ice cream, or chopped nuts.
