Total Time:35 minutes
Yield:6 servings 1x
Ingredients
Scale
1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Zinfandel)
2–3 cinnamon sticks
1 tablespoon whole cloves
2–3 star anise
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice berries
1 orange, sliced
1 lemon, sliced
1/4 cup sugar, honey, or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
Instructions
In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine the red wine, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, nutmeg, allspice, orange slices, and your chosen sweetener.
Place the pot over low heat and simmer gently for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours. Do not boil the wine, as this can evaporate the alcohol and alter the flavor. The longer it simmers, the more the flavors will meld together.
Before serving, strain the mulled wine through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the spices and citrus. Serve hot in mugs or heat-resistant glasses. Garnish with orange slices, cinnamon sticks, or star anise for an elegant touch.
