Total Time:35 minutes
Yield:6 servings 1x
Ingredients
Scale
2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
4–6 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, divided
1/2 – 3/4 cup whole milk or heavy cream, warmed
Salt and Pepper to taste
1/4 cup sour cream or cream cheese (optional)
Fresh herbs like chives or parsley (optional)
Instructions
Prepare the Potatoes: Peel and quarter the potatoes. Place them in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt.
Cook the Potatoes: Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender. They should easily break apart when pierced with a fork.
Infuse with Garlic: While the potatoes are cooking, melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add the minced garlic and cook, stirring frequently, for 2-3 minutes, or until fragrant but not browned. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as it will become bitter.
Drain and Return to Pot: Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them thoroughly in a colander. Return the potatoes to the pot.
Mash the Potatoes: Using a potato masher or a ricer, mash the potatoes until smooth. If using a masher, be careful not to overwork the potatoes, as this can make them gummy. A ricer will give you the smoothest results.
Add Butter and Garlic: Pour the garlic-infused butter over the mashed potatoes. Add the remaining 4 tablespoons of cold butter, cut into small pieces.
Incorporate Milk/Cream: Gradually add the warm milk or cream, stirring until the potatoes reach your desired consistency. Start with 1/2 cup and add more as needed.
Season and Serve: Season the mashed potatoes with salt and pepper to taste. Stir in sour cream or cream cheese, if using. Garnish with fresh herbs, such as chives or parsley, if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy!
