Total Time:55 minutes
Yield:8 servings 1x
Ingredients
Scale
6–8 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup rolled oats (optional, for added texture)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick pieces. Place the apple slices in a large bowl.
Add the granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice to the bowl with the apples. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
Transfer the apple mixture to a 9-inch baking dish or pie plate. Dot the top of the apples with the small pieces of butter.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, rolled oats (if using), cinnamon, and salt.
Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry blender or your fingertips to cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. The mixture should hold together slightly when squeezed.
Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
Let the apple crumble cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or custard.
